NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A university in Virginia has announced a $200 million fundraising campaign hoping it'll help those who struggle with paying tuition and attract gifted students.

The Virginian-Pilot reports the president of Old Dominion University announced Wednesday morning the campaign begins this fall. John Broderick said at his annual state of the university presentation, a typical ODU student lacks roughly $1,700 per year in resources needed to pay tuition and fees.

Nearly all of $160 million raised will go toward scholarships, research and faculty. About $40 million would be raised for athletics with $20 million helping to fund a renovated Foreman Field football stadium.

If the goal is met, ODU will approach $1 billion in new public and private resources. It's raised nearly $250 million in private funds under Broderick's nine years.
