Talking about Weaknesses in a Job Interview

Career Advice October 2020

Talking about weaknesses is not the smoothest part of an interview. And that is because it is easier to talk about the positive than the negative aspects of ones personality.

When facing a crisis, we think of ways to solve it and save the day. We do not stop to think about what it is that does not let us move on, what our limitations are. And it is OK because it is not the moment to do so.

As human beings, we are not perfect. The point is to decide and do some reflexive work on our limitations.  It will help with an interview and our current jobs as part of our lives. So, take more than one moment to introspect and identify those aspects you could change from your end in your present position and how those same aspects have obstructed a good performance.

You may also want to consider your current work scenario and observe if your present employer seems uncomfortable with your performance and why.

Some negative aspects to consider about myself.

You may want to ask for help or meditate. Whatever suits you, think about those personal characteristics you would like to change to be a better version of yourself and work on them. For example, if you are a natural pleaser, you find it difficult to say no. And this trait will reflect in your professional life. Faced with the question related to your weaknesses, you may mention that you like challenges, so, as a natural pleaser, you ended up overwhelmed in the past. But now, experience has taught you that, before relenting, you need to make sure that you will not neglect your current projects.

What my current employer may not like about me.

We all think we fulfill our duties the best we can and that it is enough. However, it may not be so for your employer. He or she would look over your shoulder and take a peek at what you are doing when you get your hands on a new project. What bothers them or makes them nervous? Do you meet deadlines with enough time? Or do you rush to make it on time? Why does it happen? Well, you might find a weakness there. You find it hard to delegate, so you take in all the work and end up rushing. You may want to say at an interview that it is difficult to delegate because you like to see through the whole process, see how a project is born, how it grows until it gets all done. That is, being in control. However, you have learned that, by trusting others, you can still have an eye on your work.  At the same time, you make the burden on your shoulders lighter, and, most importantly, you can get different perspectives on the same matter that will ultimately enrich the project.

You will find endless lists of possible questions and answers related to soft skills flaws on the web. And it is fair to read them. They will serve you as a starting point to know where the bullets may come from in the interview and help you shape your answers. However, your answers' relevance lies in owning your story with realistic replies that apply to your personality

Although you have to be careful with your answers, the main point here is to show your interviewer that you can identify your weaknesses. Still, you are not fearful of freezing or getting stuck because of a particular personality trait. It would really help if you showed them that you have learned something from experience, that you keep on learning, and that you are capable of keeping your weaknesses under control and use them to your advantage.
