Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the Nickelodeon cartoon series “SpongeBob Squarepants” and an alumnus of Humboldt State University, and his wife Karen have gifted $135,000 to HSU to support marine sciences research, including student research projects in oceanography, marine fisheries and marine biology.

Endowment To Support Marine Sciences Research

SpongeBob Creator Stephen Hillenburg and his wife Karen have endowed $135,000 to Humboldt State University.

Hillenburg is an HSU alumnus that gained notoriety for the appreciation of marine life through the Nickelodeon animated television series “SpongeBob Squarepants.” The endowment was created to support marine sciences research.

Grant awards for student research projects in marine biology, oceanography, and marine fisheries will be available through the recently established Stephen Hillenburg Marine Science Research Award.
