MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia University's major fundraising campaign has reached $1.125 billion with six months to go.
The WVU Foundation reports nearly $140 million in new gifts and pledges received in the fiscal year that ended June 30.
The campaign called "State of Minds," began in 2012 with an original goal of raising $750 million by December 2015. But the school surpassed that goal in 2014, prompting the foundation and university to raise the goal to $1 billion and extend the deadline to December 2017.
Last September, the foundation announced donations had exceeded $1 billion.
According to university officials, more than 60 percent of the donations support students, mostly through scholarships.
Through June, 774 scholarships, 55 faculty chairs and professorships and 221 new funds to assist research were established during the campaign.
