SDCCD Receives $1.6M To Support Foster Youth

Funds To Benefit Students At San Diego City, Mesa And Miramar Colleges

The San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) has received $1.6 million to support foster youth. Current and former foster youth attending San Diego City, Mesa and Miramar colleges now have access to additional resources that will help them achieve their educational goals.

These funds allow the colleges to bolster staff and add support services through the San Diego Community College District’s Cooperating Agencies Youth Educational Support (CAFYES) program NextUp. Through the program funding is provided for counselors, tutors, career guidance, child care and grants that assist students with books, housing as well as other non-tuition costs at 45 California community college campuses.

Overall, the program’s purpose is to help current and former foster youth overcome obstacles that would prevent them from earning a certificate or degree. According to a 2017 study there are more than 23,000 former foster youth in the California Community Colleges system. Students must be under age 26, in foster care on or after their 16th birthday and enrolled in at least nine units at a campus with the NextUp program.
