Online Job Opportunities for Educators

Career Advice December 2020

In the past, considering a job at home for an educator was limited to tutoring. However, over the last decade, a whole system to support remote learning has made its entrance hand in hand with technology and created other alternatives. A new concept of teaching and education, in general, has been carving its fate. COVID19 has accelerated the process, and now, practically nobody can envision a future without it. Schools and universities have already modified entire curricula for online and blended learning to complement on-campus learning.

In the past, just the thought of commuting to a different place to have an extra income after teaching all day was exhausting. Now, partly forced by the pandemic, companies and educational institutions are starting to trust that educational materials, classes (delivery, development, and supervision) can be done from home. New opportunities open up for educators who would like to work flexible hours or for faraway places they would have never been able to access by regular commuting.

If you are a current or former educator interested in a job online, here are some options:

Remote Teaching

Working online for an institution, homeschooling or private tutoring, teaching online can give you the flexibility to choose when and how many hours you want to work and avoid commuting. Of course, you will need to meet specific requirements if your employer is a college or university. For example, a Master's or doctoral degree, proven teaching experience, and IT knowledge are a must for these institutions. Remote teaching does not mean sacrificing quality.

For homeschooling positions, the regulatory statutes vary from state to state. So, be certain to check the laws of your state of residence first. Homeschooling job requirements also depend on the kind of employer. You will find that church schools, for example, have different regulations from public schools. Also, in many cases, there are not prescribed teaching qualifications. You may have to work on a student progress report and fulfill a certain amount of hours and days yearly, though. Again, it will all depend on your state regulations.

When private tutoring, your compromise will be personal, and people will feel it. That is why many private tutors get their students by word of mouth.

Online Course

If you feel you can make a step ahead, and although it is more demanding than teaching because you will need different skills, you may want to design a course and market it on a teaching and learning site or start your YouTube channel.    Something like this may not be profitable straight away but can be the foundation for slowly developing your own business.

If you would like to disconnect from all matters directly related to the classroom and classes per se, you might find these other options appealing.

Writer

Educators' training includes good writing skills that can become handy. You will also need to research, analyze, and develop a comprehensive understanding of the topic since you will be creating original content to be featured in books, manuals, reviews, magazines, pamphlets, etc.

Editor/Proofreader

Maybe not so demanding as writing an original piece, editing and proofreading may become more practical options to make an extra income. While diting aims at improving the narrative clarity by making changes to the text, correcting grammar mistakes, etc. Proofreading will focus primarily on formatting, punctuation, and accuracy of words used. If possible, select a field, such as marketing, health, insurance, etc. It will be easier to build your expertise in a specific area if you choose one you like.

Although here presented as part-time jobs, the alternatives mentioned above may become professional careers if you feel you would like to bring some change to your life while staying connected with your roots as an educator.
