The expression “you never get a second chance to make a first impression” is especially true when it comes to your resume.  Often long before a possible employer shakes your hand or even hears your voice, they will “meet” you through your resume.  So, it is essential to ask yourself: how to create the perfect resume

Before writing your resume, make sure it has several aspects that we cite below

So, to the main question: how to make a perfect resume? Truthfully, that question should be how to build a perfect resume since there is a very specific structure perfect resume writing.  The University of Maryland’s Division of Student Affairs offers a checklist to help students make sure they remember all the aspects needed to conquer that resume perfect format

Several aspects

Format – the foundation of a perfect resume is its format.  What is the perfect resume format? To start, the font size should be 10-12 pt. and needs to be used consistently throughout the resume.  The margins should be between .5” and 1.25” and the typeface should be both easy to read and professional.  In addition, you want to list the Objective and Education at the top of your resume.

Contact information – of course, a resume is not useful if it doesn’t include your current contact information like your name, mailing address, email and phone number.  You can also include your LinkedIn URL.

Objective – the perfect resume objective needs to be very clear by either stating the exact job you are interested in or the type of job you would like.  You should also talk about the skills you have or want to develop in connection to this job or type of job.

Education –  you want to not only include your degrees and concentrations but also any honors, awards and scholarships you received.  If you have study abroad experience, it can be included in this section.  Finally, only include your GPA if it’s 3.0 or above.

Experience – the perfect resume structure is all items in the content sections of your resume should be in reverse chronological order and should include your position, the name of the company or organization where you worked, where it was located and when you worked there.  Bulleted lists are very useful in this section.  Use short statements that begin with strong verbs (avoid using personal pronouns).  In addition, use proper verb tenses (past tense for past experiences and present tense for current positions).

Additional Experience and Skills – don’t forget that nonwork-related experience such as volunteering and extracurricular activities can be part of your resume.

Finally, while you don’t need to list your references, you can include a line at the bottom of your resume that advises potential employers that references are available upon request.  Your resume should optimally be one page and don’t forget to check it for spelling and grammar errors before sending it out.
