RUTGERS, THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY
New Brunswick, NJ
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a leading national public
research university and the state’s preeminent, comprehensive
public institution of higher education. With our acclaimed faculty of scholars
and scientists, we educate the top students from around the world, make discoveries,
advance the economy, and improve people’s lives.
As it was at our founding in 1766, the heart of our mission
is preparing students to become productive members of society and good citizens
of the world. Jersey Roots, Global Reach is not just our slogan;
it is also what we want for our students. We offer more than 100 undergraduate
majors and 180 graduate degree programs; some are among the oldest
of their kind in the nation, while others are the first to be offered in the
U.S.
Located midway between Boston and Washington, D.C., and with campuses just moments
from New York City and Philadelphia, Rutgers attracts an incredible
array of students, faculty, and staff who are drawn to America’s most
dynamic region. Rutgers is deeply rooted in New Jersey, and the university’s
diversity of people, programs, and environments mirrors that
of its densely populated, multicultural, and complex home state.
Rutgers’ more than 380,000 alumni succeed in every field
of human endeavor. They live in all 50 states and on six continents; more than
200,000 live in New Jersey. Rutgers ranks 6th in the nation for value delivered
to graduates in SmartMoney’s survey of college costs versus salaries earned
by alumni of 50 public and private institutions.
Rutgers is distinctive. It is the sole university in the U.S. that was a colonial
college that grew to become a land-grant institution and a public university.
It is the only public university in New Jersey in the Association of American
Universities (AAU), a group comprising North America’s 62 leading research
universities, known for the outstanding quality of their research and academics.
Princeton is New Jersey’s only other AAU member.
Our Campuses
Rutgers–New Brunswick is where Rutgers began—244
years ago. The largest of the three Rutgers campuses, it is home to more than
37,000 students and the school’s Division IA football team, the Scarlet
Knights. It comprises five smaller campuses—Busch, College Avenue, George
H. Cook, Douglass, and Livingston—each with its own distinctive characteristics,
offering everything from open greens and hiking trails to a downtown with cafés,
shops, theaters, and restaurants.
Rutgers–Newark, a cosmopolitan campus in the University
Heights section of New Jersey’s largest city, has more than 11,500 students—from
the U.S. and 70 other countries. It is perennially ranked #1 for diversity by
U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges.
Rutgers–Camden, located just across the Delaware River
from historic Philadelphia, is the most prominent institution of higher education
in southern New Jersey. More than 5,700 students study on its charming tree-lined
campus.
