THOMAS JEFFERSON SCHOOL OF LAW
San Diego, CA
Diversity isn’t an option at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. It’s
an ongoing commitment that stems directly from the core values and philosophy
of the law school, which are reflected in its mission statement: “The
mission of the Thomas Jefferson School of Law is to provide an outstanding legal
education for a nationally based, diverse student body in a collegial and
supportive environment…”
The result is a vibrant, diverse atmosphere among faculty, students and staff
along with thriving student organizations, which reflect the student body diversity:
38% are students of color and 20% are Latino.
The law school is committed to the individual success of every student and provides
a richly supportive environment, including an extremely effective academic support
program, student support programs and a highly accessible and caring faculty,
which is dedicated to student success.
The academic program at Thomas Jefferson School of Law has been carefully designed
to ensure that it offers a balanced and comprehensive curriculum that will educate
students to practice in any area of the law to which their careers may take
them. Yet, it has a distinctive flavor. Rapid technological change and the accompanying
process of globalization have transformed most areas of the law while also giving
rise to entirely new ones. Because the growth in the Thomas Jefferson faculty
has coincided with these trends, the law school has acquired special strengths
in the areas of law that most reflect our changing world; that is, those relating
to technological change, globalization and the transformation of our social
order.
Thomas Jefferson has a highly active La Raza Students Association, a multi-cultural
group of law students concerned with issues facing the Latino/a community, school
service, and legal scholarship. Members of La Raza perform community service
each semester, ranging from staffing youth outreach fairs, serving as mentors
to elementary students, and participating in various other community projects
throughout San Diego County. La Raza is very active with the San Diego Bar Association
and La Raza Lawyers. Such lawyers serve as mentors to each La Raza student,
providing guidance, professional advice, and academic assistance. La Raza invites
all members to "make a difference” in both their communities and
their school.
Thomas Jefferson School of Law is proud to offer several study abroad opportunities
for its students and students from other law schools.
The Summer International Law Program in Hangzhou, China is in its third year,
and TJSL students also are able to study at the Faculte de Droit de l'Universite
de Nice, in Nice, France. Exchange programs are also available with several
foreign law schools.
San Diego offers an incomparable setting for the study of law. Few other places
offer so much potential for both professional development and personal fulfillment.
The city is built on a series of hills surrounding the San Diego harbor. The
hillsides offer a montage of palm trees and the red tile roofs characteristic
of Spanish architecture, while the horizon is dominated by the majestic blue
of the Pacific Ocean.
It is truly law school in paradise!
