SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY
New Haven, CT
Southern Connecticut State University is a comprehensive public university with a rich history and vibrant future. It is amid a renaissance with the development of state-of-the-art facilities, as well as new, innovative academic opportunities. Founded in 1893 as the New Haven Normal School, the university is rooted in generating exemplary public school educators. Today, it leads the state in producing highly qualified teachers, but it also includes a full range of academic and professional disciplines with 117 undergraduate and graduate programs. Southern recently added two terminal degree programs -- an Ed.D. and an M.F.A.
Among the disciplines offered are:
*Nursing – Southern is addressing the state and national nursing shortage
with vigorous, hands-on programs. Among them are a standard baccalaureate degree,
an accelerated program designed for those seeking a career change to nursing
and an online program for registered nurses seeking to get their B.S.N.
*Sciences – The university is meeting the state’s increasing need
for science and mathematics professionals. Two science classes have been declared
model courses by the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement. Southern
jointly operates with Yale University a materials science/nanotechnology center.
*Business – The rapidly growing School of Business includes a range of
majors that include management, marketing, accounting, economics and finance,
and an M.B.A. A stock-trading room now enables students to make real-life investments.
A $260 million campus construction project has included the recent construction
of a four-story student center with a Grand Ballroom, movie theater, book store,
food court and other amenities. The main academic building has been renovated
and expanded into a 21st century facility. A project to renovate and expand
Buley Library is under way. And bigger and better projects lay ahead, thanks
to a $950 million plan for the four Connecticut State University System schools.
A new science building, health and human services building and the renovation
of the former student center into a facility for the School of Business are
on the drawing board.
The 168-acre campus is located near the historic West Rock Park in the Westville
section of New Haven, a diverse and culturally-rich community. It is within
an hour’s drive of New York City and three hours of Boston. New Haven
is located along Connecticut’s coastline filled with beaches, hiking trails
and other attractions.
Campus recreational facilities include an indoor and outdoor track, a fitness
center, basketball court, softball field, swimming pools and more.
The university’s Lyman Center for the Performing Arts offers a constant
array of cultural activities. Southern’s annual Mary and Louis Fusco Distinguished
Lecture Series has included Colin Powell, Rudy Giuliani, Madeleine Albright,
Bill Belichick, Whoopi Goldberg and Tim Russert.
